After waiting anxiously to get tickets for Bill Cunningham during its extended showing this week at Film Forum...Alexandra in tow....finally saw the film that made my heart melt for the 82 year old man in the infamous blue smock cruising the streets of NYC on one of his 29 Schwinn bicycles and trusy Nikon (film, not digital) camera. I dont know how to express the overwhelming feelings of emotion, inspiration, respect, awe, and curiosity this documentary evoked. Yes, I am categorically and utterly amused by "street style" photography and fashion blogs of the like. Yes, I admire Bill's point of view (and let me tell you he has quite a point of view). But there is so much more about this film that resonated with me...it reinforced the reason why I am in completely and absolute in love with New York City. I have always had this affection with New York...something about this city screams history, mysteries, discoveries, and hardships that I have not found or felt in any other place known to me. New York has an artistic, renaissance essence that I really dont know how to describe. Yet, getting lost amongst the grit of the ever and
over ambitious, fashionable, successful, eclectic, melting pot that is Manhattan - emerges a man with such a stone wall thick work ethic, point of view, and above all one of the most devastatingly modest critical figures in art, fashion, photography. My favorite Bill antics include calling everyone "kids" and refusing to drink even a glass of water at any gala because he is there to work, only. One of the most inspiring and moving documentaries I have seen. Yes Im getting all cheeseball..but I cant help it.
”Fashion is the armour to survive the reality of everyday life. I don’t think you could do away with it. It would be like doing away with civilization.” - Bill Cunningham
